Air fryers are one of the best appliances for single-serving cooking: they preheat in 3 minutes (vs 10–15 for an oven), produce proper crispiness and browning that a microwave cannot, and cook single portions efficiently without the waste of heating a full oven. Most single-serving meals take 10–20 minutes total. The key is choosing a basket size appropriate for one — a 5–6 qt fryer with a single chicken breast produces lower-quality results than a properly loaded 3 qt unit.
The fastest and most practical single-serving air fryer meals: one chicken breast at 375°F for 12–18 minutes; a salmon fillet at 390°F for 9–12 minutes; one pork chop at 400°F for 12–15 minutes; two Italian sausages at 375°F for 12–15 minutes; a small portion of fries (½ lb) at 400°F for 12–15 minutes; two eggs in a ramekin at 300°F for 6–9 minutes for baked eggs; one burger patty at 375°F for 10–14 minutes. These times assume a preheated basket and food not packed into an oversized basket.
A single serving of vegetables (roughly 1–1.5 cups chopped) works extremely well at 375–400°F. Broccoli florets: 8–10 min. Asparagus spears: 6–9 min. Brussels sprouts (halved): 12–15 min. Bell pepper strips: 8–10 min. Zucchini coins: 8–10 min. Toss in ½ teaspoon oil and a pinch of salt before cooking. For a complete solo meal, cook a protein first, rest it tented in foil, then cook vegetables in the same basket using the residual seasoning — saves washing up and adds flavor.
The air fryer is unmatched for reheating single portions of leftovers: pizza (2–3 min at 350°F), fries (3–5 min at 400°F), fried chicken (5–8 min at 375°F), and spring rolls or dumplings (4–6 min at 360°F) all come out far crispier than from a microwave. For soups or stews, use a microwave — the air fryer cannot handle liquids. When reheating a solo portion, use a small ramekin or foil container to keep the food contained if it is prone to drying out.
For solo cooks, a 3–4 qt air fryer is almost always better than a larger model. Smaller baskets concentrate heat more efficiently around a single portion, preheat faster, use less electricity, and take up less counter space. If you also cook for guests occasionally, a 5 qt is a reasonable compromise. Avoid buying an 8 qt for solo use — at low capacity, large baskets circulate air unevenly and you will not get the crispiness the appliance is capable of.
