Air Fryer Keeps Turning Off: Why and How to Fix It

Air fryers have a thermal cutoff that shuts the unit down when internal temperatures climb too high. It is usually triggered by restricted airflow — the fryer pushed against a wall or under a cabinet, vents blocked, or a build-up of old grease on the element that starts to smoke. Move the unit into open space with 10–15 cm of clearance all round, unplug and let it cool, then wipe cooled grease off the top element and empty the drawer between fatty batches. Better airflow and a clean element prevent most repeat shutdowns.

Because the basket safety switch cuts power the moment the drawer is not fully seated, vibration during cooking can nudge the basket open just enough to shut the unit off on some models. Push the basket firmly in until it clicks, check for food debris or warping that stops it seating flush, and make sure the unit is on a level, stable surface so it does not rattle the drawer loose.

Intermittent shutdowns can also come from the power supply. Plug the fryer directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension lead or a strip shared with other high-draw appliances, since voltage drops and overloaded circuits cause mid-cook cut-outs. Inspect the plug and cord for looseness or damage, and try a different outlet on a separate circuit to rule out a tripping breaker.

Not every shut-off is a fault. Many air fryers turn off automatically when the timer ends, when you pull the basket out to shake food, or after a period of inactivity to save power. If the unit only stops at the end of the set time or when you open it, that is designed behaviour, not a problem — it resumes when you reinsert the basket.

Why does my air fryer shut off before the timer ends?
