Most air fryer problems fall into six patterns: the unit is completely dead, it runs but does not heat, it shuts off mid-cook, it smells of burning, the fan is loud or silent, or the food keeps coming out wrong. The two fastest universal checks are to push the basket or drawer all the way in — most models cut power or heat when the safety switch is not engaged — and to test the wall outlet with another device. Use the sections below to jump to your exact symptom.
Before anything else, confirm two things. First, the basket, drawer, or tray must be fully inserted — nearly every air fryer has a safety interlock that stops the heating element (and often the whole unit) until the basket clicks into place, so a drawer sitting a few millimetres proud looks exactly like a broken fryer. Second, confirm the outlet is live by plugging in another appliance, and avoid extension leads, which can drop voltage on a 1400–1800W device. These two checks resolve a large share of air fryer faults with no repair needed.
Completely dead — no lights, no fan, no heat? That is a power or safety-interlock problem. Runs and the fan spins, but food stays cold? That is a heating fault or a wrong setting. Turns off part-way through the cook? That is usually overheat protection or a loose basket. Strong smell? A plastic smell on a new unit is normal, but a sharp electrical smell is not. Fan silent or suddenly loud? That points to the interlock or debris near the blade. Food soggy, dry, or uneven? That is a cooking-technique issue, not a fault. Each pattern has a dedicated guide linked below.
Do not open the housing, replace internal wiring, or bypass the basket safety switch. Air fryers run at high wattage and high temperatures, and internal repairs are a shock and fire risk. If the unit is still under warranty, opening it usually voids that warranty. When the checks in the linked guides do not help and the fryer still fails, unplug it, stop using it, and contact the manufacturer or retailer — most brands replace faulty units within the warranty period.
Unplug the air fryer at once and do not use it again if you notice a burning-plastic-or-wire electrical smell with no food inside, visible sparks, a cracked or melted plug, a cord that is hot to the touch, or a burning smell paired with the unit tripping your breaker. These are electrical-fault symptoms, not cooking problems, and continuing to run the appliance is a genuine fire risk.
