An air fryer is better for crisping, speed, and small quantities of food. A toaster oven is better for baking, melting cheese, broiling, and cooking larger flat items like a full pizza. If crispiness and convenience are your priorities, choose an air fryer. If versatility and cooking surface area matter more, choose a convection toaster oven. Hybrid units (Breville Smart Oven Air, Ninja Foodi XL Pro) do both but are larger and more expensive.
An air fryer's smaller chamber concentrates heat more intensely than a toaster oven's larger cavity. This means faster preheating (2–3 min vs 5–10 min), faster cooking for most foods (15–25% faster on average), and dramatically crispier results on fried-style foods. Chicken wings in an air fryer at 400°F take 20–22 minutes and come out with genuinely crispy skin. The same wings in a toaster oven take 28–35 minutes and the skin is lighter and less crackling. For frozen fries, nuggets, and breaded fish, the air fryer wins by a significant margin every time.
A toaster oven handles a wider range of tasks. It can toast bread (an air fryer makes mediocre toast). It bakes with more consistent, even heat — muffins, cookies, and small cakes come out more reliably. It broils effectively. It can fit a 12-inch pizza, a 9×5 loaf pan, or a small casserole dish — items that would not fit in a standard air fryer basket. A convection toaster oven with a fan can approximate air fryer results on many foods, though not with the same intensity of crispiness.
Air fryers come in more sizes, starting from compact 2 qt models. They are generally easier to clean (removable basket goes in the dishwasher). Toaster ovens are wider but lower-profile and can sometimes slide under a cabinet more easily. For someone who primarily wants to cook proteins and sides quickly, an air fryer takes up less space and is more practical daily. For someone who wants one appliance to handle toast, reheating, baking, and crispy foods, a large convection toaster oven is the better single-appliance purchase.
If your kitchen has space and you cook frequently, both appliances serve non-overlapping use cases well enough to justify having both. If space is limited, a premium convection toaster oven (Breville BOV900, Cuisinart TOA-95) does both jobs at 80–90% quality. The Ninja Foodi and similar dual-function units combine air fryer and toaster oven capabilities in one footprint, though they are bulkier and more expensive than either standalone unit. The worst choice is a cheap toaster oven with a 'air fry' mode — they rarely match a dedicated air fryer's crispiness.
