A completely dead air fryer with no lights and no fan is almost always a power or safety-interlock issue, not a broken machine. Check the wall outlet with another device, reset a tripped breaker or GFCI, make sure the plug is fully seated and the cord is undamaged, and push the basket all the way in — many models will not power up until the safety switch is engaged. Avoid extension leads, which can stop a high-wattage fryer working.
Start at the wall. Plug another appliance into the same outlet to confirm it is live, and if it is dead, reset the circuit breaker or, in kitchens, the GFCI (RCD) socket, which trips easily near sinks. Plug the air fryer directly into the wall rather than through an extension lead or power strip — at 1400–1800W, many fryers under-perform or refuse to start on undersized leads. Finally, inspect the cord and plug for damage; a cracked plug or frayed cord means you should stop using the unit.
Most air fryers include an interlock that keeps the controls unpowered until the basket, drawer, or tray is fully inserted. If the unit is silent even though the outlet is live, push the basket firmly all the way in until it clicks, and check that nothing — a stray chip, warping, or a misaligned tray — is holding it a few millimetres open. This single step revives a surprising number of apparently dead fryers.
On digital models, a blank or frozen touch panel can be caused by moisture on the surface or an accidental child-lock or standby state. Wipe the panel completely dry, unplug the unit for a minute to clear a frozen controller, then plug back in. Check the manual for a child-lock icon, which disables the buttons until it is held to release.
If the outlet is confirmed live, the plug and cord are sound, the basket is seated, and the panel is still completely dead, the fault is internal. Do not open the housing or attempt a repair — this is a mains-voltage appliance. Unplug it, stop using it, and contact the manufacturer or retailer, as a dead-on-arrival or internally faulty unit is a standard warranty claim.
