Quick Answer
A new air fryer often gives off a plastic or chemical smell for the first two or three uses as factory residues and protective coatings burn off — running it empty at 400°F (205°C) for 10–15 minutes usually clears it. But a sharp electrical or burning-wire smell, especially with no food inside, means you should unplug the unit immediately and stop using it. A food or grease smell is a separate, harmless cleaning issue.
Almost every new air fryer smells of hot plastic or chemicals for the first few uses. This is manufacturing residue and protective coatings on the element and interior burning off, and it is not dangerous. To clear it, wash all removable parts, then run the empty fryer at 400°F (205°C) for 10–15 minutes in a ventilated kitchen to season it. The smell fades noticeably after two or three cooks; if it has not gone after five or six, treat it as unusual.
A sharp, acrid electrical smell is different from a plastic one and should never be ignored — especially if there is no food inside, the plug feels hot, you hear buzzing, or the smell comes with the unit tripping a breaker. Unplug the air fryer at once, stop using it, and do not open the housing. These are symptoms of a wiring or element fault and a real fire risk; contact the manufacturer for repair or replacement.
If the smell only appears while cooking and smells of food or hot oil rather than plastic or electrics, it is a cleaning issue, not a fault. Grease from previous cooks left on the element or drawer smokes and smells on the next use. Clean the drawer and wipe the cooled element after fatty foods, add a little water to the drawer under greasy items, and avoid high-sugar marinades that char. See the dedicated smoke and smell guides for more.
Once you have ruled out an electrical fault, remove stubborn smells by washing the basket and drawer in warm soapy water, wiping the interior and cooled element, and then running the empty fryer with a small heatproof dish of water and a little lemon juice or vinegar for a few minutes. Leaving the drawer open to air out between uses also helps.
