Yes — but only if the plate is oven-safe and fits with enough clearance around the edges for airflow. Ceramic and metal plates rated for oven use work safely. Standard dinner plates, plastic plates, paper plates, and melamine should never go in the air fryer.
A plate is air fryer safe if it is oven-rated to at least 400°F and fits in the basket with at least 1 inch of clearance on all sides for air circulation. Check the bottom of the plate for an oven-safe symbol — usually an oven icon or the words "oven safe." If there is no marking, do not risk it.
Ceramic and stoneware plates rated oven-safe are fine in the air fryer up to their rated temperature. Oven-safe glass (like Pyrex) works as well. Small metal plates and ramekins are perfectly safe. Cast iron and stainless steel work too, though they are rarely plate-shaped.
Never use standard dinner plates not marked oven-safe — they can crack or shatter from the heat. Plastic, melamine, and any plate with plastic elements will melt. Paper plates are a fire hazard. Plates with metallic paint or gold/silver trim can arc and damage the appliance.
Even a safe plate can cause problems if it completely blocks the basket floor or sides, restricting hot air circulation. This results in uneven cooking and can strain the air fryer's heating element. Always ensure there is visible space around and ideally under the plate.
Oven-safe ramekins, small ceramic baking dishes, and foil containers often work better than plates because they contain food better and are sized appropriately for air fryer baskets. Perforated parchment liners serve the purpose of non-stick surface without the airflow restriction of a flat plate.
