Air fry frozen tater tots at 400°F for 12–16 minutes, shaking halfway, until golden-brown and crispy. No oil spray needed — the coating crisps up beautifully in the circulating air.
Pour frozen tater tots into the basket in a single layer — some overlap is fine for the first half of cooking since they shrink slightly. Air fry at 400°F (205°C) for 12–16 minutes, shaking the basket vigorously at the halfway mark. They are done when deeply golden and audibly crunchy.
Air fryers circulate heat more intensely than a conventional oven, resulting in a crispier crust in less time. Tater tots that take 25 minutes in an oven are done in 12–15 minutes in an air fryer with better crunch.
Do not stack tots in multiple deep layers — spread them as flat as possible. If your basket is too small, work in two batches. Skipping the preheat can also result in soggy tots; preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes before adding tots.
Serve with ketchup, cheese sauce, ranch dressing, or sriracha mayo. Tater tots are excellent loaded with chili and cheese, or served alongside burgers and sandwiches.
