Air fry a grilled cheese sandwich at 375°F for 6–8 minutes, flipping carefully halfway, until both sides are golden-brown and the cheese is fully melted. Butter the outside of both bread slices first.
Butter the outside of both bread slices generously — this creates the golden, crispy exterior. Assemble with your cheese inside. Cheddar, American, Gruyère, or a combination all melt well. Use 2–3 ounces of cheese for a standard sandwich.
Place the sandwich in the basket. To prevent it from opening, use a toothpick or place a small piece of foil loosely on top. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 3–4 minutes, then carefully flip and cook another 3–4 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is melted.
Airflow in the basket can cause bread to lift and separate. A toothpick through the center holds it together. Alternatively, use a rack or trivet to weigh it down slightly.
Add tomato slices, thinly sliced deli meat, or a spread of Dijon mustard inside before cooking. For extra crispiness, use mayonnaise on the outside instead of butter — it browns more evenly and has a slightly higher smoke point.
